Abortion Training Workshops and Simulations

workshops and simulations

These workshops are designed to aid clinical instructors who are teaching abortion care to the next generation of providers. Learners should prepare by familiarizing themselves with the steps of the abortion procedure, as detailed in the Uterine Aspiration Procedure and Medication Abortion chapters of the Abortion Training Curriculum.

Papaya MVA Training Workshop

Papaya MVA Training Workshop

This workshop is designed to teach procedural skills to learners new to uterine aspiration, including using a tenaculum, performing a paracervical block, maintaining sterile technique, dilating the cervix, and performing a uterine aspiration for early pregnancy loss or abortion.

Ultrasound simulations

Ultrasound simulations

The following resources provide tutorials on how to create models and phantoms for uterine ultrasound practice for trainees learning to perform early pregnancy ultrasounds.

Counseling simulations

Counseling simulations

These simulations provide learners the opportunity to practice patient-centered and trauma-informed counseling in contraception options, pregnancy options, medication abortion, and uterine aspiration procedures.

Emergency and Complication Simulations

The following simulations are designed to teach skills that are rarely encountered in medication and procedural abortion and early pregnancy loss care, including complications such as hemorrhage, syncope, over sedation and infection; general medical emergencies within a primary care or reproductive healthcare setting; and clinic-based emergency drills focused on clinic-wide safety protocols.

Procedural Abortion Complication Simulations

Procedural Abortion Complication Simulations

The procedural abortion complication simulations review and provide clinical skill development in the most common complications encountered in abortion care, including hemorrhage, syncope, and over-sedation. Given the multiple etiologies of abortion-related hemorrhage requiring different active management skills, the simulations focus largely on different abortion hemorrhage scenarios along with instruction on hands-on procedural management.

Medication Abortion Complication Simulations

Medication Abortion Complication Simulations

Serious complications in medication abortion are exceedingly rare. These simulations range from complication triage for common patient calls not requiring active management, to the rare complications that require medical or procedural intervention.

medical emergency simulations

medical emergency simulations

While rare, medical emergencies can surface in any clinical setting and it is important to be prepared to ensure patients receive the life saving care they may need. These simulations focus on potential life threatening scenarios that may occur in any clinical setting, ensuring each member of the clinical team has the chance to understand and practice their role in a medical emergency.

Clinic Emergency Simulations

Clinic Emergency Simulations

These simulations allow clinics to run drills with clinic providers and staff when encountering rare situations that may come up in any clinical setting, to ensure that staff are prepared if an emergent situation is encountered.
