As a local and national leader in abortion training, TEACH champions reproductive health, rights, and justice policy that protects patients, community members, and providers from anti-abortion extremism and advances reproductive freedom. We advocate at the state level and through passing resolutions at the CAFP and AAFP to push family medicine forward through our powerful coalition partners and network of CREATE alums and TEACH-trained providers.

2024

The Reproductive Health Emergency Preparedness Program

Establishes the Reproductive Health Emergency Preparedness Program (RHEPP) to train emergency departments to provide access to timely, evidence-based treatment of pregnancy loss, miscarriage, and abortion. With these skills, providers will continue to expand access and help Emergency departments better serve the reproductive health needs of people who have been traditionally excluded from the healthcare system.

Clinic Access and Streamlining

AB 2085 streamlines the development of needed community clinics. By streamlining the process for development, the bill will expand healthcare access in California for our most vulnerable communities. Currently clinic construction is being blocked by local opposition, bad faith lawsuits, and unnecessary regulatory hurdles that especially harm abortion providers, but through creating protections for clinics in areas already zoned for retail and services we can increase access in healthcare deserts and the 40% of counties that lack abortion providers.

Reproductive Health Service Corps (RHSC)

TEACH led the fight to pass AB1918, creating funding for the Reproductive Health Service Corp offering scholarships, loan repayment options and training programs in abortion care for the whole healthcare team. RHSC seeks to diversify abortion providers by making training accessible to all, train new and existing health staff in abortion care, and provide abortion care in the 40% of California counties that lack providers by integrating abortion with primary care.

In September 2021, more than 40 organizations joined together to form the California Future of Abortion (CA FAB) Council with TEACH serving on the coalition Steering Committee. With the support of the Governor and legislative leadership, convened to identify barriers to abortion services and recommend policy proposals supporting equitable and affordable access to abortion care for Californians and all who seek care here. As California takes the lead, living up to its proclamation as a “Reproductive Freedom State,” the organization developed the CA FAB Council Report.

California’s Abortion and GAHC Shield Law

SB345 strengthens legal protections to patients and providers who prescribe or dispense medication abortion or provide gender affirming healthcare, preventing overreach from abortion-hostile states.

Professional Liability Insurance Protection for Abortion Providers

AB 571 ensures clinicians are not discriminated against, or outright denied coverage, for their professional liability insurance for providing abortion & gender affirming care.

Abortion Training — Guest Residency Rotations

AB 1646 facilitates guest rotations in medical residency programs in California for residents who can no longer receive the proper training due to their program being in a state with restrictions or bans.
